The Snape Maltings concert hall will host the 64th Aldeburgh Festival this year, as well as a host of other events over the year.
Based on the classic novel by Goethe that took Europe by storm, Werther is a tragic story of forbidden love – and rarely in opera is its destructive power felt so close to the bone. Musically, ETO’s new version promises to be extraordinary. Iain Farrington is preparing an intimate arrangement for a salon ensemble that will be on stage with the singers. The title role is sung by emerging talent Ed Ballard, in the special version for baritone prepared by the composer. Carolyn Dobbin (Teodata in ETO’s Flavio in 2009) plays Charlotte, the object of his unrequited love. An opera for anyone who confesses to 19 having a feeling or two, for those who are drawn to artists, to nature or to poetry, Werther is a veritable whirlwind. Don't miss the pre-performance talk with the cast and creative team in the Peter Pears Recital Room.
